Haz-Elec Industries – Key Personnel

Brian McCarthy and Adrian Simpson started Haz-Elec in 2009, with a view to servicing Hazardous Area and Industrial electrical customers around Cairns and Far North Queensland. Since then, the business, its service area and personnel have grown exponentially. Today the Haz-Elec team consists of over 30 trade professionals servicing domestic, commercial, industrial and mining clients around the region and country.

The team includes electricians, boilermakers and engineers: key personnel as follows.

Brian McCarthy - Director

Brian has national and international electrical experience and expertise, specifically in Hazardous Area work and projects. Starting his career in Ireland, as an apprentice Electrician / Instrument Fitter with Jameson Irish Distillers, which has numerous Hazardous areas and significant process control, Brian travelled the world furthering his trade and honing his skills. Settling in Australia, Brian continued to expand his Hazardous Area electrical expertise, through the management and commissioning of many large projects for clients such as BP, Shell, Caltex and more.

Brian started his electrical career in Ireland as a youngster, helping his electrician father on weekends, fixing domestic installations and water pumps. Following in his father’s footsteps, Brian has forged an impressive electrical career specialising in Hazardous Area work, before founding Haz-Elec with Adrian Simpson.   • City and Guilds Part 1, 2 and 3 Design and Installation of electrical equipment.

  • Management and commissioning of many large projects for BP, Shell, Caltex, Origin Energy and Queensland Sugar to name a few.
  • Experience in all areas and type of protection in relation to Hazardous Areas, process control of plants and conveyor systems.

Adrian Simpson - Director

Adrian has national and international electrical experience and expertise, covering all areas of industrial and commercial work. After completing his electrical apprenticeship in Australia, Adrian added to his qualifications with a Diploma in Computer Engineering. He completed a nine year stint in the United Kingdom, where he expanded his expertise managing a UK-based Computer Maintenance Company. He was contracted to set up an Australian branch of this company and trained in business management, finance and accounting.

Adrian started his career in Australia, expanded his expertise, qualifications and experience in the United Kingdom, before returning home. Bruce Knox - Engineering Manager

Bruce has established a solid reputation for providing engineering, design and support services to Industrial, Hazardous Area and Transportation clients. He has more than 35 years’ experience in a variety of engineering and management sectors, including more than 20 years specifically in Hazardous Area design, auditing, automation, installation and servicing. As well as delivering turnkey solutions for clients, Bruce is also able to offer support and guidance to engineers in other disciplines, in matters of process and facility management.

Bruce initially entered the industry as an Electrical Fitter / Mechanic before completing his Electrical / Electronic Engineering studies at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). For more information, contact Bruce Knox on b.knox@hazelec.com.au

  • Design, project management and commissioning of numerous electrical and control system upgrades for Petroleum Storage and Handling Facilities, including multi-product Bulk Terminals and Airport Hydrant Refuelling Facilities.
  • Hazardous Area compliance auditing and reporting on many Bulk Terminals and Airport Refuelling Facilities, in capital cities and regional areas.
  • Queensland Accredited Hazardous Area Auditor No. 02/0203.  Appointed at inception of Accreditation of Private Auditors in 2003.
  • Experienced Designer and Classifier of Hazardous Areas. Holder of Cert IV in Hazardous Areas plus all relevant and current competencies for Design and Classification of Hazardous Areas.
  • Member of Australian Standards Committee convened to implement AS4722-2009: Passenger Ropeways and Passenger Conveyors.
  • Recipient of USQ Dean’s Commendation for Outstanding Performance.
  • Cert IV in Hazardous Areas, Occupational Health & Safety
  • 20+ years’ experience in PLC programming, visualisation and commissioning of process control installations, over a wide range of complexity.
  • In addition to Hazardous Areas and Transportation systems, extensive experience in Maritime and Aviation sectors.

Robert Lomax - Project Manager

Robert’s electrical knowledge and expertise cover a breadth of industries and applications. Excelling in commercial and industry systems, Rob worked in major shopping centres, airport buildings, quarries and hazardous areas, before moving into power sub-stations and transmission networks. He has more than 25 years’ experience in the electrical industry, covering all facets of domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. As well as being personally qualified and experienced to perform electrical work in Hazardous Areas, Rob has the background and capabilities to project manage the Haz-Elec team.

Robert initially entered the industry working on appliance repairs. He is a fully qualified Electrical Fitter / Mechanic and has been with the Haz-Elec team since 2011. For more information, contact Robert Lomax on r.lomax@hazelec.com.au

  • Experience in small to large scale refrigeration systems, elevators, motor control.

Johan Vorster - Townsville Manager

Johan has a solid professional background in electrical services, with a focus on developing, implementing and maintaining effective maintenance schedules and associated works to maximise productivity and compliance. He gathered more than 25 years’ electrical experience with some of Australia’s leading, major national mining and industrial companies, including BHP Billiton and JBS Australia, before joining the Haz-Elec team in 2012. Johan capably manages Haz-Elec’s Townsville branch and is an important member of the key management team.

Johan started his electrical career and training in South Africa, before moving to Australia and becoming a qualified Electrician. He spent 13 years with BHP Billiton Bayside Aluminium, as an Electrician and Fitter, and a further 3 years at BHP Billiton Samancor Metalloys as Rotable Controller.
