Caltex Australia – Cairns Wharf 7/8 Refuelling Control System

Overview

As part of Caltex’s terminal operations in Cairns, a dedicated diesel refuelling facility was established to supply fuel from the Draper Street terminal to Wharf 7 and 8 along the foreshore. The project presented significant logistical and engineering challenges, including service crossings under roads, railway lines, secured port areas, and a final span over water — all while adhering to strict clearance and environmental requirements and maintaining terminal operations.

Scope of Works

  • Design and installation of the refuelling control and dispensing system from terminal control centre to wharf.
  • Removable control system configuration across three refuelling points allowing safe pre-connection testing and operational verification.
  • Integration of full operational safety and functionality without interrupting existing terminal activities.
  • Supply and installation of stainless-steel support systems along foreshore and under-wharf environments for corrosion resistance.
  • Engineering, project management, electrical and mechanical installation, and detailed EEHA inspections.

Key Outcomes

Delivered during one of the wettest June periods on record, the project required precise coordination and robust design to withstand the coastal marine environment. Haz-Elec Industries successfully completed the works on time, on budget, and incident-free — providing Caltex with a safe, reliable, and maintainable refuelling control system that met stringent operational and environmental standards.
