Ladhu Haul Road & Mapoon Road – Traffic Signalling and Power Supply System

Overview

Haz-Elec Industries was engaged by Rio Tinto to design, supply and install a hybrid power and traffic signalling system at the intersection of Ladhu Haul Road and Mapoon Road, Weipa. The project represented the first prototype traffic-controlled intersection of its kind within Rio Tinto’s operations, integrating advanced control, power generation and monitoring technologies to improve safety and traffic management for heavy haulage and light vehicle movements.

Scope of Works

  • Design, supply and installation of a hybrid power system incorporating solar generation, inverters, battery storage and a standby generator.
  • Supply, installation and commissioning of a traffic signal control system integrated with Rio Tinto’s communications network.
  • Installation, programming, testing and commissioning of PLCs, SCADA interface and CCTV systems.
  • Trenching and backfilling for electrical and communications conduits, and installation of cable pits.
  • Supply and installation of roadway lighting poles.

Key Outcomes

Delivered in a remote and operational mining environment, the project required careful planning and collaboration with Rio Tinto’s engineering team to ensure the prototype system was both practical and scalable. Early design engagement and detailed procurement scheduling enabled timely delivery despite logistical challenges. The completed system provides a reliable, self-sustaining power and control solution that enhances intersection safety and operational efficiency at Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations.
