Scherger RAAF base Substations Refurbishment

Overview

Haz-Elec Industries was engaged under a Design and Construct contract to deliver a major upgrade of the high and low voltage electrical infrastructure at RAAF Base Scherger. The project involved detailed design, protection coordination, and integration of remote switching and monitoring systems across the base’s power network.

Scope of Works

  • High voltage design including protection scheme and remote switching and monitoring integration.
  • Low voltage design and installation for new main switchboards and LV distribution systems.
  • Installation of 14 Ring Main Units, seven oil-filled transformers, two 2MVA dry-type transformers, and a 500kVA standby generator.
  • Installation and commissioning of 14 main switchboards ranging from 600–1600A.
  • HV and LV cable installation and terminations, including removal of redundant infrastructure.
  • Full site acceptance testing (SAT) and commissioning.

Key Outcomes

Delivered within an active operational RAAF facility in remote Cape York, the project was completed under challenging weather conditions and logistical constraints typical of the region’s wet season. Haz-Elec’s integrated design, installation and commissioning capability ensured reliable power distribution and improved system resilience for Defence operations at the base.
